Islamabad: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman has stated that her party will not support any proposed legislation related to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in the Senate unless it undergoes a comprehensive review by the relevant standing committee.

Speaking on the matter, Rehman emphasized the importance of parliamentary scrutiny and stakeholder consultation before any telecom-related legislation is approved. She argued that laws affecting digital rights, telecommunications, and public interests should not be rushed through the legislative process without detailed debate.

According to the PPP leader, the standing committee system exists to ensure transparency, accountability, and expert input on complex legislation. She maintained that any PTA bill must be examined clause by clause, with lawmakers given sufficient opportunity to assess its legal, economic, and social implications.

The remarks come amid growing debate over proposed telecommunications legislation, with critics expressing concerns about regulatory powers, digital governance, and the potential impact on consumers and businesses. Supporters of the proposed measures, meanwhile, argue that reforms are necessary to modernize the telecommunications sector and improve digital infrastructure.

Rehman reiterated that the PPP supports constructive reforms but would oppose any attempt to bypass parliamentary procedures or limit meaningful discussion on legislation with far-reaching consequences.

Political observers view the statement as a signal that the party intends to push for greater oversight and consensus-building before any PTA-related bill advances through the upper house of Parliament.
