President Asif Ali Zardari has approved a key bill to complete all legal formalities for the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The approval is being seen as a major development in the government’s efforts to move forward with the long-awaited privatisation of the national flag carrier. The new legislation removes legal and administrative hurdles linked to the airline’s restructuring and future sale process.
Officials say the move is part of Pakistan’s broader economic reform agenda focused on reducing losses from state-owned enterprises and attracting private investment. PIA has faced financial difficulties for years due to mounting debt, operational inefficiencies, and management challenges.
The government believes that privatisation could help improve the airline’s services, modernise operations, and restore its position in regional and international aviation markets.
Sources added that following the president’s approval, authorities are expected to proceed with the next phase of the privatisation plan, including investor engagement and bidding procedures in the coming months.
