The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) suffered a sharp reversal on Tuesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index plummeting 1,690 points by the closing bell. The index settled at 93,428, marking a significant breach of the psychological 95,000 support level that had held firm throughout the week.

Trading volume saw a massive spike as institutional investors and retail traders alike rushed to liquidate positions. The sell-off wasn’t confined to a single sector; blue-chip stocks across banking, oil and gas, and fertilizer took heavy hits.

Market analysts point to growing anxiety over the upcoming International Monetary Fund (IMF) review and stalled policy reforms. Investors are reading the tea leaves, and they don’t like the look of the current economic trajectory. The sudden volatility suggests that the market’s recent record-breaking rally may have outpaced the country’s actual fiscal health.

“The market was clearly overbought,” said one brokerage head in Karachi. “A correction was overdue, but the speed of this decline reflects a deeper lack of confidence in the government’s ability to navigate the next round of tax adjustments.”

Beyond the technical correction, uncertainty surrounding the tax-to-GDP ratio and the energy sector’s circular debt continues to weigh on sentiment. Foreign investors, who had recently shown a lukewarm interest in Pakistani equities, were notably absent from the buying side today.

For the average trader, today’s session was a stark reminder of the market’s fragility. Many who entered the market during the recent bull run are now sitting on paper losses, forcing them to decide whether to cut their losses now or wait for a rebound that may not arrive this quarter.

The KSE-100 now faces a critical test. If the index fails to stabilize above the 93,000 mark in Wednesday’s session, traders fear a further slide toward the 91,000 level. For now, the momentum lies firmly with the bears.
