Public Transport Services to Face Partial Suspension in Karachi During Muharram

KARACHI: The Karachi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Green Line will remain suspended from the 8th to the 10th of Muharram — corresponding to July 5th to 7th — due to security concerns during Ashura, officials announced on Friday.

According to a spokesperson for the Sindh Mass Transit Authority, the suspension is part of broader precautionary measures taken to ensure the safety of mourners and the smooth flow of Muharram processions across the city.

In addition to the Green Line shutdown, the Peoples Bus Service will also operate on a limited basis:

  • On Muharram 8, five routes will be partially disrupted

  • On Muharram 9 and 10, seven out of ten routes will remain completely suspended

The decision comes as part of a comprehensive security and traffic management plan implemented by city authorities in collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

Traffic Diversion Plan Issued

The Karachi Traffic Police have issued a detailed traffic diversion plan for Muharram 8 to 10, advising citizens to use alternate routes as several key roads — including MA Jinnah Road from Guru Mandir to Tower — will be closed for all types of traffic.

Alternate Routes Suggested:

  • From Nazimabad: Use Lasbela Chowk via Garden to reach Nishtar Park

  • From Liaquatabad: Turn right at Teen Hatti and take Martin Road

  • From Hassan Square to PP Chowrangi: Use Kashmir Road under the Jail Flyover, then head to Shahrah-e-Quaideen, or use Jail Flyover to Teen Hatti, proceeding via Lasbela Chowk to Nishtar Road

Traffic police have urged commuters to plan ahead, follow diversions, and cooperate with personnel deployed across the city.

Public Holidays and Religious Observances

The federal government has declared July 5 and 6 (9th and 10th of Muharram) as public holidays to mark Youm-e-Ashura, as per a notification by the Cabinet Division.

Muharram, one of the four sacred months in Islam, holds deep religious significance. The 10th of Muharram, Ashura, commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.

Throughout the country, large-scale processions and majalis are held under strict security arrangements. Religious scholars deliver sermons in memory of the tragedy of Karbala, emphasizing the values of sacrifice, justice, and truth.
