Russian satellites perform ‘sophisticated’ maneuver, passing within 10 feet of each other

Two Russian military satellites have drawn fresh scrutiny after performing an unusually precise orbital maneuver that brought them within about 10 feet, or three meters, of each other in space. According to recent reporting based on commercial tracking data, the satellites involved were COSMOS 2581 and COSMOS 2583, while a third satellite, COSMOS 2582, remained nearby during the operation. Analysts said the close pass took place on April 28, 2026.

What has experts talking is not just the distance, but the control needed to pull it off. Space analysts quoted in current reports described the maneuver as highly sophisticated, saying it appeared deliberate rather than accidental. Tracking company COMSPOC, using radar data from LeoLabs, said COSMOS 2583 carried out a series of movements to maintain close formation, pointing to advanced rendezvous and proximity operations in orbit.

The satellites are part of a Russian trio launched in February 2025, and observers have been watching them for months because of repeated unusual activity. Reports say the group has conducted multiple proximity maneuvers since late 2025, and one of the spacecraft had previously released a smaller object, adding to outside concern over the mission’s real purpose. Russia has not publicly explained the operation in detail.

That uncertainty is what gives the story its edge. Close-proximity satellite work can be used for perfectly legitimate tasks, including inspection, docking practice, servicing, and formation flying. But the same capabilities can also have military value, especially in an era when major powers are paying much closer attention to counterspace technologies and orbital security.
