After a remarkable career spanning over three decades, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has finally been honoured with India’s highest cinematic recognition — the National Film Award. The 71st National Film Awards, announced on August 1, recognized Khan for Best Actor for his performance in the 2023 blockbuster Jawan.
In a surprising twist, Shah Rukh shares the Best Actor award with Vikrant Massey, who was lauded for his compelling role in 12th Fail. This marks the first time in his illustrious career that Shah Rukh Khan has received this prestigious national honor, despite having previously won numerous international awards and popular Bollywood accolades.
Shah Rukh Khan, who made his debut in 1992 with Deewana, quickly rose to fame with iconic performances in films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Chak De! India. Over the years, he became one of the most celebrated and influential actors in Indian cinema. However, the National Film Award remained elusive — until now.
In Jawan, Khan portrayed a double role and appeared in seven different avatars throughout the film, a testament to his versatility and deep acting range. His performance was widely praised by audiences and critics alike, contributing significantly to the film’s massive commercial success.
Reacting to the honour, Shah Rukh shared a heartfelt video on Instagram, thanking the Government of India and his fans for their unwavering support. His pride and gratitude were clearly evident as he accepted the award that had long evaded him.
Also recognized at the same event was actress Rani Mukerji, who won the National Award for Best Actress for her role in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway.
Shah Rukh Khan’s win is being celebrated not just by the industry but by millions of fans who have long awaited this moment. His recognition at the national level marks a significant milestone in his career and cements his legacy as one of India’s most iconic film stars.
