Karachi, June 17, 2026: The Sindh government has expanded its solar energy initiative by announcing the distribution of free solar systems to hundreds of thousands of low-income households across the province. The move aims to reduce electricity costs and improve access to clean energy, particularly in areas facing power shortages.

According to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, the government had already launched a program to distribute 200,000 solar systems, with thousands of units delivered to deserving families. At the directions of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, an additional 500,000 solar systems will now be provided to low-income households during the current phase of the project.

The scheme is primarily aimed at families with limited access to electricity and those struggling with rising power bills. Under previous phases of the program, beneficiaries received solar home systems capable of powering essential household appliances such as fans and LED lights. The initiative is being implemented under the broader Sindh Solar Energy Project, which is supported by international funding and focuses on expanding access to renewable energy across the province.

Reports indicate that eligibility for free solar systems generally targets low-income consumers, particularly households with low monthly electricity consumption. Previous government guidelines have suggested that consumers using up to 100 electricity units per month could qualify for assistance under the scheme.

Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said the program aims to bring affordable, sustainable electricity to underserved communities while promoting the adoption of renewable energy across the province. The government is also developing large-scale solar projects, including a 400-megawatt solar park, to strengthen Sindh’s clean energy infrastructure.
