An earthquake struck Peru’s southern Arequipa region early Sunday, killing at least six people and injuring dozens more. The 7.0-magnitude tremor hit at a depth of roughly 8 kilometers, turning quiet mountain villages into scenes of chaos as homes collapsed and roads buckled under the force of the shaking.

The epicenter, located near the coastal town of Yauca, sent shockwaves through the province of Caraveli. Local officials report that the death toll is likely to rise as rescue crews navigate treacherous, debris-strewn mountain passes to reach remote communities cut off by the quake.

“We are still assessing the full extent of the damage,” said the regional governor, Rohel Sánchez, during a brief press briefing. “Our priority is getting medical supplies and heavy equipment into the hardest-hit zones before nightfall.”

Initial reports from the Civil Defense agency confirm that at least 60 homes have been destroyed, leaving hundreds of residents homeless. Many families are now sleeping in the open, fearing aftershocks that have continued to rattle the region since the initial tremor.

The quake’s shallow depth amplified its impact on the surface, causing significant structural damage to adobe dwellings and older infrastructure. In Caraveli, power grids were severed, plunging entire districts into darkness and complicating the emergency response.

Peru sits on the “Ring of Fire,” a volatile tectonic zone stretching along the Pacific coast where seismic activity is a constant, looming threat. While the government maintains strict building codes for major cities, rural areas like Arequipa often rely on traditional construction methods that offer little resistance to high-magnitude events.

As the sun sets, the focus shifts from search and rescue to basic survival. With temperatures dropping in the high-altitude region, aid groups are rushing to provide tents and blankets to those who lost everything in the span of a few seconds.

For the people of Arequipa, the rebuilding process will be long, but the immediate crisis remains the search for survivors buried under the rubble of their own homes.
