ATLANTA: American referee Tori Penso made football history on Thursday after becoming only the second woman to officiate a men’s World Cup match.
Penso took charge of the Group A encounter between Czechia and South Africa at Atlanta Stadium, marking a significant milestone for the sport and further advancing women’s representation at the highest level of international football.
The achievement comes after French referee Stéphanie Frappart became the first woman to oversee a men’s World Cup fixture during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
For Penso, the historic appointment represents the culmination of a journey that began at the age of 14. Born in Stuart, Florida, she initially developed a passion for football through her older brothers and dreamed of playing the sport herself.
However, following encouragement from her mother, she chose to begin refereeing youth matches, a decision that ultimately shaped her professional career.
Reflecting on her early experiences, Penso said officiating taught her valuable life skills, including quick decision-making, confidence under pressure and leadership in challenging environments.
“It was inspiring, and it changed my whole perspective,” she said while recalling the influence of female role models in sport.
Penso has consistently broken barriers throughout her career. In 2020, she became the first woman in nearly two decades to referee a match in Major League Soccer when she officiated a game between Nashville SC and D.C. United.
Her latest achievement at the World Cup is being hailed as another landmark moment for football, demonstrating the growing role of women in elite officiating and inspiring future generations to pursue careers in the sport.
As she blew the opening whistle in Atlanta, Penso not only began a crucial World Cup fixture but also added her name to the history books of international football.
