Donald Trump was moved between aircraft inside a catering truck during a 2024 campaign trip to avoid a direct security threat, according to new details emerging from his security detail.

The incident, which occurred during a flight to a rally, reportedly stemmed from specific intelligence regarding an Iranian threat against the former president. Rather than deplaning in the traditional manner—which would have left him exposed on the tarmac—Secret Service agents opted for a covert extraction. Trump was ushered into the back of a catering vehicle, shielded from view, and driven directly to a backup aircraft waiting nearby.

This level of operational secrecy highlights the intensity of the security perimeter surrounding the Republican nominee. The threat, linked to ongoing Iranian hostility in the wake of the 2020 Soleimani strike, has forced the Secret Service to overhaul its standard protection protocols.

“We are operating in an environment that is constantly shifting,” one former security official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive protection methods. “When the threat level hits a certain threshold, the playbook goes out the window. You don’t take risks with a high-value target in an open environment.”

The use of a catering truck—an unconventional choice for a former president—illustrates the lengths to which agents are going to maintain a “low-profile” movement strategy. While the Secret Service has declined to comment on specific tactical maneuvers, the agency has acknowledged that it has “significantly increased” the assets and technology deployed to protect Trump in recent months.

The Iranian government has consistently denied seeking to harm the former president, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated fabrications. However, U.S. intelligence agencies maintain that Tehran views the 2020 killing of Qasem Soleimani as an unsettled score.

The logistics of the swap suggest a high degree of urgency. By bypassing the terminal and utilizing service vehicles, the detail managed to complete the transfer without alerting onlookers or potential spotters.

For the Trump campaign, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks inherent in his continued public appearances. For the Secret Service, it remains another data point in an increasingly complex security landscape where traditional protection methods are no longer considered sufficient.
