Washington — U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order pledging that any armed attack on Qatar will be treated as an attack on the United States, vowing full protection of the Gulf state’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and critical infrastructure.
The order, dated September 29 and published on the White House website, underscores Washington’s commitment to Doha in the wake of Israel’s September 9 strike in the Qatari capital that targeted Hamas leaders during ceasefire deliberations.
“Any armed attack against the territory, sovereignty, or vital installations of the State of Qatar will be considered a threat to the peace and security of the United States,” the order states, adding that the U.S. will take “all appropriate measures — diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military.”
The move comes amid efforts to mend tensions following Israel’s action in Doha, which Qatar condemned as “cowardly and treacherous.” On September 29, during a conference call with Trump, Israeli PM Netanyahu offered condolences and an apology to Qatari PM Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani for the killing of a Qatari citizen.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Doha on September 16, reaffirming the U.S.-Qatar security partnership and stressing joint commitment to a more secure and stable Middle East.
