A Danish pharmaceutical company has introduced weekly insulin in India, making it the world’s first weekly insulin.
With this new medication, diabetes patients will need only 52 injections a year instead of 365 daily injections.
According to the Managing Director of the Danish pharmaceutical company in India, this is not just a new medicine but an important solution for people with Type 2 diabetes, as many patients delay starting insulin therapy due to fear of daily injections.
The company also stated that fear of daily injections and the difficulty of continuous blood sugar monitoring lead to an average delay of 7 to 9 years in starting insulin treatment. The new weekly insulin could reduce this barrier and make treatment easier for patients.
The medication has been approved for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients aged 18 years and above and will be administered through a FlexTouch pen.
According to Indian media reports, the insulin will be manufactured in Denmark and imported into India.
Indian media further reported that the company has kept the price of the medication relatively affordable. Weekly insulin is said to be as effective as daily insulin, while cases of hypoglycemia, a dangerously low blood sugar condition, have also been reported less frequently among users.
