Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has directed party lawmakers to resign from all parliamentary committees, his sister Aleema Khan revealed on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists outside Adiala Jail after meeting her brother, Aleema said:
“Imran Khan has instructed all PTI members to submit their resignations from the National Assembly’s standing committees.”
She further disclosed that Imran rejected participation in the upcoming by-elections, calling it a move that would only provide “legal cover” to the process. According to Aleema, Imran also issued specific instructions to PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Secretary General Salman Akram Raja regarding the decision.
Earlier reports indicated that Aleema herself had opposed contesting the by-elections, citing Imran’s clear stance. However, Raja reportedly presented the political committee’s deliberations, revealing that 13 members supported participation while nine opposed it. The disagreement reportedly disheartened Raja, leading him to tender his resignation from his party position a resignation Imran later refused to accept.
Sources also confirmed that Imran has nominated Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) chief Allama Nasir Abbas as the opposition leader in the Senate and Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai for the same role in the National Assembly.
Aleema added that Imran expressed deep concern over his wife Bushra Bibi’s situation and the recent arrests of Shershah and Shahrez, both accused in connection with the May 9 riots. Police claim to have video evidence of Shershah’s presence at Jinnah House and allege his involvement in attacks on security personnel. Shahrez’s name reportedly appeared in a supplementary investigation report last year.
The PTI founder also criticized Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, claiming cricket has been “destroyed” under his watch. Additionally, he expressed sorrow over the devastation caused by floods in Buner and other regions.
Regarding his health, Aleema confirmed that Imran is generally well but has an eye problem. “A petition will be filed for his eye treatment, and doctors from PIMS hospital will be called,” she said.
Aleema revealed that this was the first time in four months that all of Imran’s sisters were allowed to meet him. “We had been trying for three months, and today, by Allah’s grace, it happened,” she added.
