Karachi dairy farmers demand Rs50 hike in milk prices

Dairy farmers in Karachi have called for an immediate increase of Rs50 per litre in milk prices, warning that the industry is facing severe financial strain following recent floods.

Speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, leaders of the Dairy Farmers Association said production costs had surged as the prices of essential inputs for the dairy sector jumped by nearly 30%. They cautioned that without urgent relief, the crisis could lead to widespread cattle starvation.

The farmers highlighted that Karachi’s dairy colonies house more than one million cattle and buffalo, supplying around 5 million litres of milk to the city daily. Despite this, they claimed the industry is suffering losses amounting to Rs3 billion each day.

They stressed that raising the price of milk by Rs50 per litre was now “inevitable.” Currently, milk is being sold in Karachi at Rs220 per litre.

The farmers also threatened to stage a protest outside the Sindh Chief Minister’s House if the government failed to approve the price hike by October 1.
