Bogotá — October 16: Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced that his government will send seized gold to help rebuild Gaza, following the signing of the Israel-Hamas peace agreement.
In a social media post, President Petro said that Colombia’s Special Assets Society — the agency responsible for managing properties and assets confiscated from criminal networks — will deliver “gold seized from drug traffickers” to support medical treatment for children injured in the Gaza conflict.
The Colombian leader also revealed that his government will propose a resolution at the United Nations to form a global peacekeeping force dedicated to Gaza’s reconstruction.
Colombia has previously extended humanitarian assistance to Palestinian children affected by the long-standing conflict.
President Petro, a long-time advocate for Palestinian rights, has been an outspoken critic of Israel’s military actions and alleged human rights violations, repeatedly urging the international community to push for a lasting peace in the region.
The United Nations recently estimated that rebuilding Gaza could cost around $70 billion, with at least $20 billion needed in the first three years to restore critical infrastructure and basic services.
