Deep in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, scientists have launched the AmazonFACE project a “climate time machine” that pumps carbon dioxide into the forest canopy to mimic future atmospheric conditions. Located near Manaus, the experiment involves six steel rings surrounding dozens of mature trees, with some exposed to higher CO₂ levels predicted for the coming decades.
Led by Brazil’s National Institute for Amazon Research (INPA) and supported by the U.K., the study aims to understand how the rainforest will adapt to rising carbon levels and global warming a key topic for discussion at the COP30 climate summit in Belem next month. Researchers say it’s the first experiment of its kind in a tropical forest, offering vital insights into how these ecosystems could behave in the future.
