Germany Commits $131 Million to Support Pakistan’s Climate and Energy Transformation

Germany has announced a development assistance package worth over $131 million (approximately €114 million) to strengthen Pakistan’s ongoing efforts in climate resilience, renewable energy, and sustainable economic growth.

The new commitment was finalized during bilateral development cooperation talks held in Islamabad, where both countries reaffirmed their long-term partnership in environmental and economic reforms.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the financial and technical assistance will be deployed within the current fiscal year. The package is designed to help Pakistan accelerate its energy transition, expand social protection programs, and generate new employment opportunities aligned with the government’s URAAN Pakistan economic transformation agenda.

The discussions were co-chaired by Muhammad Humair Karim, Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Christine Toetzke, Director-General at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Senior officials, ambassadors, and technical experts from both sides attended the negotiations.

German officials emphasized that the funding reflects Berlin’s ongoing commitment to help Pakistan tackle climate challenges, reduce carbon emissions, and build sustainable infrastructure. Christine Toetzke also lauded Pakistan’s recent economic and energy reforms, calling them “an encouraging step toward inclusive and resilient development.”

At the conclusion of the meeting, both delegations signed a Summary Record, officially documenting the new agreements. The next round of bilateral development cooperation talks between Pakistan and Germany is scheduled to be held in Berlin in 2027.
