A devastating cyclone has struck Sri Lanka, killing at least 153 people and leaving over 190 missing, as heavy rains and flash floods wreak havoc across the island nation. Cyclone Ditwah, which hit in late November 2025, has forced tens of thousands to evacuate their homes and seek shelter in public buildings.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) confirmed that over 44,000 people have been directly affected by the cyclone and resulting floods. Many were relocated to schools, community centers, and other emergency shelters for safety.

Authorities report that most fatalities occurred due to landslides triggered by relentless rainfall, with some northern and eastern districts receiving up to 300 millimeters of rain in just a few days. Roads and bridges have been damaged or washed away, complicating rescue operations.

The government has declared a state of emergency and called for international assistance to provide immediate relief, including food, clean water, and medical supplies to the most affected regions. Rescue teams are working tirelessly, but flooding and landslides have hampered access to remote areas.

Impact and Response:

Fatalities: 153 confirmed, 191 still missing

Displaced: Tens of thousands moved to temporary shelters

Damage: Widespread flooding, destroyed homes, and blocked roads

Government Action: Emergency declared, rescue operations ongoing, international aid requested

Meteorologists have warned that heavy rains may continue in some regions, raising fears of additional landslides and flooding. Residents have been urged to remain in shelters until conditions stabilize.

Cyclone Ditwah developed in late November 2025, gaining strength as it approached Sri Lanka’s coastline. The cyclone is one of the deadliest in recent years, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to climate-driven extreme weather events.

As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on saving lives, providing emergency aid, and restoring infrastructure. Authorities have urged communities to remain vigilant and follow official guidance to minimize further loss.
