Smoking is considered highly harmful to health, increasing the risk of cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. Now, another major drawback of this habit has been identified.
A study has found that children of fathers who are habitual smokers may face metabolic problems in the future. Metabolic issues affect the body’s ability to control blood glucose and increase the risk of diabetes.
Research conducted by the University of California, USA, stated that smoking is one of the leading causes of poor health, and quitting it can help prevent multiple diseases.
According to the study, quitting smoking may help reduce the risk of developing diabetes, and this is particularly important for men.
Experiments conducted on mice revealed that when male mice consume nicotine, a component found in tobacco, negative changes occur in the metabolic functions of their offspring. The findings suggest that smoking habits in men may increase the risk of diabetes in their children.
During the experiments, it was observed that the offspring of male mice had lower insulin levels, while their fasting glucose levels were also below normal.
The study also examined changes in liver function, which can increase the risk of issues such as obesity and diabetes. The findings of this research were published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society.
