Study Reveals Causes Behind Worsening Mental Health in Younger Generations

A research report has found that mental health is deteriorating with each new generation, identifying four major reasons behind this trend.

‎According to the report, nearly half of young people worldwide are affected by mental health issues, with early smartphone use, unhealthy (ultra processed) food, and weak social connections cited as key factors.

‎The report also states that the wealthier a country is, the worse the mental health of its youth tends to be. It further notes that women often read and send messages on smartphones before going to sleep at night, while nearly half of individuals under the age of 35 are affected by mental health problems.

‎In this regard, a major international study investigating the causes of declining mental health among young people found that early smartphone use, ultra-processed diets, and weakening social relationships are among the primary contributors.

‎The Global Mind Health Report released by Sapien Labs analyzed data from more than 2.5 million people across 85 countries, including India.

‎Scientists used a metric called the Mind Health Quotient to assess individuals’ ability to cope with stress, regulate emotions, and function effectively in daily life, which led to the above findings.
