India’s Modi celebrates ‘record’ win in opposition-held West Bengal

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed a “record” victory for his Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal, a state that had long remained one of the opposition’s most important strongholds. Current election reporting shows the BJP crossing the majority mark in the 294-seat state assembly, putting the party on course to form a government there for the first time.

The result is politically significant far beyond the state itself. West Bengal has for years been ruled by the Trinamool Congress under Mamata Banerjee, one of Modi’s most prominent regional rivals. A BJP breakthrough there would not only hand the party control of a major eastern state, but also weaken one of the strongest opposition centers in Indian politics.

Modi described the outcome as a historic mandate, presenting it as proof that the BJP’s appeal is expanding even in regions where the party had previously struggled to dominate. That framing is important because West Bengal has carried symbolic weight in national politics, both as a difficult electoral frontier for the BJP and as a base for anti-BJP resistance.

If the result holds, it could strengthen Modi’s broader political standing and give the BJP a new strategic foothold ahead of future national contests. For the opposition, especially the Trinamool Congress, it would mark a serious setback in a state that had long been treated as a defensive bastion against the BJP’s expansion.
