Long sleep duration may signal higher Alzheimer’s risk in older adults

New research suggests that sleeping more than nine hours a night could be an early warning sign for Alzheimer’s disease, rather than just a symptom of aging.

While doctors have long associated sleep disturbances with cognitive decline, this study shifts the focus toward excessive sleep. Researchers found that adults over 60 who consistently log long hours of rest face a higher likelihood of developing dementia compared to those who maintain a standard seven-to-eight-hour schedule.

The findings challenge the common perception that more sleep is always better for the aging brain. Instead, experts point to a potential “U-shaped” relationship between sleep duration and cognitive health. Both chronic sleep deprivation and excessive slumber appear to disrupt the brain’s ability to clear out toxic proteins like amyloid-beta—a hallmark of Alzheimer’s.

“It’s not just about feeling tired,” says Dr. Elena Rossi, a lead investigator on the project. “When we see a sudden, sustained increase in sleep duration in older patients, it’s often the brain struggling to manage underlying metabolic or neurological stress.”

The data draws from a five-year longitudinal study involving over 3,000 participants. Those who moved from a normal sleep pattern to a long-duration pattern—sleeping nine or more hours—showed a 25% increase in cognitive performance drops over the study period.

Crucially, the researchers accounted for pre-existing health conditions, such as depression or cardiovascular disease, which often cause lethargy. Even after stripping away these variables, the link between long sleep and cognitive decline remained statistically significant.

This doesn’t mean everyone who enjoys a long nap is at risk. The concern centers on individuals experiencing a *change* in their habits. If an active 65-year-old suddenly requires 10 hours of sleep to function, it’s a red flag—not a sign of healthy recovery.

For families, the takeaway is simple: monitor shifts in routine. If a loved one’s sleep cycle lengthens significantly over a few months, it should trigger a conversation with a neurologist. Early detection remains the most effective tool in managing Alzheimer’s, and sleep duration may be the simplest, most overlooked metric in a physician’s toolkit.
