While doctors have long associated sleep disturbances with cognitive decline, this study shifts the focus toward excessive sleep. Researchers found that adults over 60 who consistently log long hours of rest face a higher likelihood of developing dementia compared to those who maintain a standard seven-to-eight-hour schedule.
The findings challenge the common perception that more sleep is always better for the aging brain. Instead, experts point to a potential “U-shaped” relationship between sleep duration and cognitive health. Both chronic sleep deprivation and excessive slumber appear to disrupt the brain’s ability to clear out toxic proteins like amyloid-beta—a hallmark of Alzheimer’s.
“It’s not just about feeling tired,” says Dr. Elena Rossi, a lead investigator on the project. “When we see a sudden, sustained increase in sleep duration in older patients, it’s often the brain struggling to manage underlying metabolic or neurological stress.”
