Pakistan’s fuel supply chain faces a chaotic standoff. The Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) chairman, Abdul Sami Khan, has announced a nationwide strike starting Thursday, yet local associations across major cities are openly defying the call.

The strike centers on a demand for a 5% increase in profit margins. Dealers argue that rising electricity costs and overheads have made the current business model unsustainable.

“We are bleeding money,” said one Karachi-based dealer who requested anonymity. “The government expects us to keep the pumps running while our margins remain stagnant against double-digit inflation.”

The Petroleum Division, however, remains unmoved. Officials in Islamabad have signaled they won’t bow to pressure, citing the potential for massive public disruption. The ministry has reportedly reached out to “alternative stakeholders”—including state-owned oil marketing companies—to ensure that if pumps do shut down, supply lines to critical infrastructure remain open.

The cracks within the association are widening. In Lahore and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, local dealer groups have distanced themselves from the chairman’s ultimatum. They fear that a prolonged shutdown will not only alienate the public but also lead to a government crackdown on their licenses.

“A strike is a last resort, not a first step,” a representative from the Lahore chapter told local media. “We are still in talks with the ministry. Shutting down the country is not the solution.”

For the average motorist, the news has triggered a predictable scramble. Long queues formed at petrol stations in Islamabad and Rawalpindi by Wednesday evening as residents rushed to top off their tanks.

The government now faces a delicate balancing act. If they concede to the demand, they risk setting a precedent for other trade unions currently threatening industrial action. If they hold firm, the country may face a genuine fuel shortage by the weekend.

As of tonight, the Petroleum Division has yet to issue a formal notification, leaving the nation caught between a disputed strike call and the threat of dry pumps.
