Karachi’s water supply faces a sharp disruption after a major power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station halted operations earlier today. The facility, which serves as the primary water lifeline for the city, remains offline as technicians scramble to restore electricity.

Millions of residents in central and southern districts now face immediate supply shortages. The Dhabeji station is responsible for pumping hundreds of millions of gallons of water from the Indus River to the city; even a few hours of downtime creates a ripple effect that takes days to fully recover.

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) confirmed the breakdown shortly after the power grid tripped. While maintenance crews are on-site, officials haven’t provided a firm timeline for when the pumps will regain full pressure.

For the average household, this means dry taps by tomorrow morning. Areas already struggling with low water pressure are expected to be hit the hardest. Many residents rely on private tankers to bridge the gap during such outages, but prices for those services typically spike the moment news of a pump failure breaks.

This isn’t the first time the city’s aging water infrastructure has been crippled by power instability. The Dhabeji station has long been a point of contention between the water board and K-Electric, with both sides frequently trading blame over grid reliability and non-payment issues.

While the city waits for the restoration of power, the looming question remains how much of a backlog the system can handle before the shortage turns into a prolonged crisis.

For now, the water board advises residents to conserve whatever remains in their underground tanks. With no immediate fix in sight, the city’s taps are expected to run dry by daybreak.
