The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a stern warning to citizens regarding the use of unregistered foreign SIM cards, labeling the practice a direct violation of national security protocols. The regulator is now moving to block any device or connection linked to international SIMs that haven’t been properly documented through official channels.

For years, these SIMs have operated in a regulatory gray area, often used to bypass local taxes or avoid the scrutiny of the Pakistan Centralized Equipment Identity Register (CEIR). The PTA’s latest push isn’t just about revenue; it’s about control. Officials argue these connections are increasingly used for grey-traffic termination, financial fraud, and activities that evade local law enforcement tracking.

“We are tracking these signals,” said a senior PTA official who requested anonymity. “If a device is using a non-compliant foreign SIM, it’s not just a technical issue. It’s a breach of our telecommunication sovereignty.”

The regulator has made it clear: the grace period is over. Users caught operating foreign SIMs without the mandatory registration face immediate service termination. Furthermore, the PTA is coordinating with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to identify the syndicates that sell these “pre-activated” foreign connections in local markets.

Critics point out that this move impacts overseas Pakistanis and business travelers who rely on roaming services. However, the PTA maintains that roaming for legitimate travel is distinct from the permanent use of foreign cards to bypass local network oversight.

The authority is now advising users to switch to local, biometrically verified connections to avoid having their handsets blacklisted. For those already using these services, the clock is ticking. The PTA has warned that once a device is flagged, regaining network access won’t be as simple as swapping the card.
