According to the World Health Organization, 12.9 million people in Pakistan are living with hepatitis, while more than 48,000 deaths occur every year due to the disease.
The World Health Organization stated that one person dies from hepatitis every 11 minutes in Pakistan, and the country is among the most affected countries in the world for hepatitis C.
According to the report, 9.1 million people in Pakistan are living with hepatitis C, while 3.8 million are living with hepatitis B. Only 3 out of every 10 patients have access to treatment, while millions remain without treatment.
The World Health Organization stated that unsafe injections and unsafe blood transfusions are among the major causes of the spread of hepatitis, while more than 88,000 new hepatitis C cases were reported in Pakistan in 2024.
The WHO has urged faster action to achieve the target of eliminating hepatitis by 2030. Efforts to eliminate hepatitis in Pakistan are continuing under the Prime Minister’s National Program.
