LAHORE — The death toll from the roof collapse in the Baghbanpura area rose to 10 on Thursday, as rescue teams pulled the final bodies from the rubble. The incident, which turned a quiet residential street into a site of frantic digging overnight, has left the city’s building safety standards under sharp scrutiny.

Emergency workers spent nearly 15 hours sifting through concrete and twisted iron. The structure, an aging house in a densely populated neighborhood, gave way without warning during the early hours of the morning. Most victims were asleep when the roof gave out, trapping entire families beneath the debris.

“We heard a thundering sound like an explosion,” said one neighbor who arrived seconds after the collapse. “By the time we reached the street, the house was already gone. There was just dust and screaming.”

Rescue officials confirm that at least 12 people were pulled from the wreckage, but only two survived. The injured are currently receiving treatment at Mayo Hospital, where doctors describe their conditions as critical.

Local authorities have launched an inquiry into the structural integrity of the home. Initial reports suggest the building was severely dilapidated and lacked the necessary permits for the recent renovations the owner had reportedly attempted. Residents claim the area is filled with similar structures that have been neglected for decades, yet little has been done by municipal authorities to enforce safety codes.

As the site is cleared, grief has replaced the chaos of the rescue effort. For the families of the victims, the focus now shifts to the funeral rites, while the city awaits a formal report on how such a tragedy was allowed to happen in a residential zone.

The district administration has promised to expedite the investigation, but for the residents of Baghbanpura, the tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the risks hidden behind the walls of Lahore’s aging urban sprawl.
