National Highway Authority issues urgent travel advisory

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has issued a nationwide travel advisory, warning motorists to exercise extreme caution as severe weather conditions disrupt key arterial routes. The alert follows a surge in fog-related accidents and infrastructure strain across the motorway network.

Heavy, dense fog has reduced visibility to near-zero levels on sections of the M-2 and M-5 motorways. Authorities are reporting a sharp rise in traffic incidents since midnight, forcing the NHA to restrict heavy traffic movement during peak hours of low visibility.

“Drivers are essentially operating blind on these stretches,” an NHA spokesperson said, confirming that the decision to limit movement was taken to prevent pile-ups. He urged travelers to check the official NHA mobile application or call the 130 helpline before departing, noting that delays are inevitable for those who ignore current warnings.

The advisory comes as the country’s road infrastructure faces mounting pressure from both climate-induced weather patterns and increased logistics activity. Road safety experts have long criticized the lack of automated fog-detection systems on major highways, arguing that reliance on manual advisories remains an outdated approach to modern traffic management.

For now, the NHA has deployed additional patrols to enforce speed limits, which have been slashed to 40 km/h on affected segments. Those who choose to travel against the advisory are being warned that highway police will not hesitate to impound vehicles found violating safety protocols.

If you must travel, do it during daylight hours. The risk of encountering a stalled vehicle in the dark, hidden by a wall of fog, is higher than at any point in the last five years.
