Health officials in Michigan are struggling to contain a massive outbreak of cyclosporiasis, with confirmed cases surging past the 12,000 mark. The gastrointestinal illness, caused by the microscopic parasite *Cyclospora cayetanensis*, has left state health departments scrambling to trace the source of the infection.

The spike in cases represents a significant public health challenge for the state. Hospitals across Michigan report a steady influx of patients presenting with severe, watery diarrhea, cramping, and fatigue—the hallmarks of the infection. While most cases are not fatal, the sheer volume of people falling ill is straining local clinics that were already managing seasonal respiratory surges.

“We are looking at a widespread contamination event,” said Dr. Elena Vance, a regional epidemiologist. She noted that while the state has seen smaller, contained clusters in previous years, this trajectory is different. “The numbers aren’t just climbing; they’re accelerating. We’re working around the clock to identify the common denominator in these patients’ diets.”

The parasite typically spreads through contaminated produce. Authorities have focused their investigation on fresh berries, imported leafy greens, and herbs that moved through regional distribution hubs over the last three weeks. Despite these efforts, investigators have yet to issue a formal recall for a specific brand or supplier, leaving consumers in the dark about which items remain safe to eat.

For many, the primary frustration is the delay in diagnosis. Cyclosporiasis often mimics other common foodborne illnesses, leading to misdiagnoses in primary care settings. Patients frequently endure weeks of symptoms before a stool sample confirms the parasitic infection, by which time the window for effective contact tracing has often closed.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is now urging anyone experiencing persistent gastrointestinal distress to request specific testing for the parasite rather than assuming a standard stomach bug. They emphasize that standard antibiotics will not work; the infection requires a specific course of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

As the investigation continues, the state is bracing for the possibility that the numbers will climb higher before they level off. Until the source is pulled from store shelves, the advice from health authorities remains stark: wash all fresh produce thoroughly, though they admit even that may not be enough to neutralize the parasite if the contamination occurred at the farm level.
