The federal government has maintained the current fuel prices for the next fortnight, keeping the cost of petrol and high-speed diesel unchanged effective August 6.

Finance Division officials confirmed the status quo late Monday night, ending days of speculation regarding a potential hike. Petrol will continue to retail at Rs269.43 per liter, while high-speed diesel remains at Rs272.77 per liter.

For the average Pakistani commuter, this stability offers a brief reprieve from the volatility that has defined the last several months. Inflation remains a primary concern for households, and fuel costs act as the main driver for transport fares and the price of essential kitchen goods.

The decision arrives amidst fluctuating international oil markets. Global crude prices have been under pressure due to concerns over a potential economic slowdown in the United States and ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Despite these external pressures, the government opted to keep local prices steady, signaling a priority to avoid further burdening an already strained economy.

Petroleum dealers had expressed concerns earlier this week, warning that any further tax adjustments could dampen sales. By holding the line, the government appears to be balancing revenue targets with the need to prevent a fresh spike in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) data confirms that international prices softened slightly in the last week of July, providing the fiscal space necessary to absorb the costs without passing them on to the pump.

While the current prices hold, the cycle remains fragile. Any significant shift in the rupee’s parity against the dollar or a sudden surge in global demand could force a re-evaluation when the next review takes place on August 15. For now, motorists will pay what they paid yesterday.
