The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has become the country’s second-largest outbreak on record, with the actual number of infections potentially being up to four times higher than officially reported.
According to WHO, insecurity in affected regions, limited access to healthcare, underreporting, and difficulties in conducting contact tracing have made it challenging to determine the true scale of the outbreak. Many suspected cases may not be captured by official surveillance systems, increasing the risk of continued transmission.
Health authorities are expanding vaccination campaigns, strengthening laboratory testing, improving surveillance, and deploying emergency response teams to affected communities. WHO has called for increased international support to help contain the outbreak before it spreads further
