The government announced a significant reduction in fuel prices late Friday, bringing petrol down by Rs 8.50 per liter. The new rate, effective from midnight, settles at Rs 265.40 per liter.

High-speed diesel also saw a price drop, falling by Rs 7.20 to reach Rs 272.10 per liter.

Finance Ministry officials confirmed the move follows a sharp decline in international oil benchmarks over the past fortnight. Brent crude prices dipped below $78 a barrel this week, driven by concerns over slowing industrial demand in China and a surplus in U.S. inventories.

For the average motorist, the relief is immediate but modest. A full tank in a standard sedan will now cost roughly Rs 400 less than it did yesterday. For the transport sector, the impact remains uncertain. While lower fuel costs should theoretically pull down the price of essential commodities, historic trends show that transport fares rarely drop as quickly as they rise.

“We’ve passed on the full benefit of the global price adjustment to the consumer,” a ministry spokesperson told reporters in Islamabad. He declined to comment on whether further cuts could be expected in the next review cycle, pointing instead to the volatility of the global market.

Critics remain cautious. Economic analysts point out that despite the relief, the government’s Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) remains at its legal cap of Rs 70 per liter. This cushion allows the state to maintain a steady revenue stream even when global prices fall, effectively limiting how much the consumer actually saves at the pump.

The decision comes as the coalition government faces mounting pressure to provide cost-of-living relief ahead of the upcoming fiscal review. While this reduction marks the third consecutive cut in two months, inflation remains entrenched.

With global supply chains currently in flux, whether this downward trend holds through the end of the quarter depends entirely on the upcoming OPEC+ production meeting in Vienna. For now, the pumps are cheaper—but the underlying economic pressure on the Pakistani household is far from gone.
