The federal government announced a significant reduction in petroleum prices late Saturday, bringing relief to motorists as the new rates took effect at midnight on August 18, 2026.

The price of petrol dropped by Rs 8.50 per litre, bringing the new retail price to Rs 264.20. High-speed diesel also saw a downward adjustment of Rs 6.50, now retailing at Rs 268.30 per litre.

Officials at the Petroleum Division attributed the relief to the recent cooling of global oil markets and a stable rupee. Brent crude prices dipped below the $78-per-barrel mark over the last fortnight, providing the fiscal space to pass savings directly to consumers.

For the average commuter, the move offers a rare break. Inflationary pressure has remained persistent throughout the year, with transportation costs serving as a primary driver of food and utility prices. While the reduction is welcome, analysts warn that the underlying economic volatility remains.

“The international market is showing signs of softening, but it’s fragile,” said an energy sector analyst based in Islamabad. “We are seeing a temporary dip, but any supply chain disruption in the Middle East could force the government to reverse these gains by the next review cycle.”

The government has faced mounting public pressure to ease the cost-of-living crisis. This price cut is the second consecutive downward adjustment, following a smaller reduction in early August. Despite the trend, the cumulative burden of taxes and levies—which account for a significant portion of the final pump price—continues to keep fuel costs well above the regional average.

Finance ministry sources confirmed the decision was cleared by the Prime Minister’s Office after a briefing from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). The focus remains on maintaining budgetary targets while preventing a complete erosion of consumer purchasing power.

For now, the reduction is set for the next 15 days. Whether these rates hold depends entirely on global benchmarks and the strength of the local currency as the month progresses.
