Karachi’s police chief has ordered an immediate inquiry into a viral scuffle involving law enforcement personnel and residents in the Defense Housing Authority (DHA), as public frustration over police conduct continues to simmer.

Additional Inspector General (AIG) Javed Akhtar Odho directed the DIG South to submit a detailed report on the incident within 24 hours. The directive follows footage circulating on social media showing uniformed officers in a heated confrontation with local residents, with witnesses claiming the encounter escalated after a routine stop turned into a display of aggression.

The incident highlights a deepening divide between the police and the city’s residents. For many in Karachi, interactions with patrol units have become synonymous with intimidation rather than protection. This specific altercation, occurring in one of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods, has reignited long-standing debates about the lack of accountability for officers patrolling the streets.

“We are looking into every aspect, including the conduct of our own men,” a senior official at the Central Police Office told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity. He confirmed that the inquiry would determine if the officers overstepped their authority or if the situation was provoked.

Local residents, however, remain skeptical. Many feel that internal inquiries rarely lead to substantive disciplinary action. The footage, which shows officers shouting and brandishing weapons during the dispute, has been shared thousands of times, fueling calls for a more transparent oversight mechanism for the city’s police force.

The DHA incident is not an isolated case. Over the past six months, there have been at least four high-profile complaints regarding police behavior in the South Zone, ranging from alleged harassment to the unauthorized use of force.

The report ordered by the AIG is expected to be finalized by tomorrow evening. Whether it leads to actual suspensions or merely serves as a bureaucratic placeholder remains the primary question for those who witnessed the confrontation.

For now, the officers involved have been ordered to report to their headquarters while the investigation proceeds.
