The European green crab is winning the war in Puget Sound. Despite aggressive trapping efforts by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), populations of the invasive crustacean have exploded, putting the region’s $100 million shellfish industry and fragile eelgrass habitats at immediate risk.

State biologists admit the current containment strategy is failing to keep pace with the crab’s rapid reproductive cycle. Last year, crews removed over 250,000 green crabs from coastal waters—a record number that signals the infestation has moved beyond the “early detection” phase.

These crabs don’t just eat; they dismantle ecosystems. They shred eelgrass beds, which serve as essential nurseries for juvenile salmon and Dungeness crab. When the grass goes, the habitat for protected species disappears. For the local fishing industry, the threat is existential. If green crabs continue to outcompete native Dungeness crabs for food and space, the region’s commercial harvest could face a permanent decline.

“We’re past the point of eradication,” said one field biologist involved in the trapping program. “Now, it’s about damage control. We’re trying to save the most critical areas, but the crabs are moving faster than our resources allow.”

The invasion is fueled by the crab’s extreme adaptability. They survive in a wide range of water temperatures and salinity levels, allowing them to colonize everything from sheltered marshes to open coastal bays. Unlike native species, they have no natural predators in the Pacific Northwest to keep their numbers in check.

State officials are now pivoting toward a community-led model. The “Crab Team”—a network of volunteers and tribal partners—is expanding its reach, but funding remains a persistent bottleneck. The legislature has authorized emergency spending, yet the sheer scale of the coastline makes comprehensive monitoring nearly impossible.

Washington’s struggle mirrors the ecological devastation seen in the Atlantic decades ago. As the water warms, the window to protect the Sound’s remaining biodiversity is closing. Without a breakthrough in either biological control or a massive increase in trapping capacity, the green crab is set to become a permanent, destructive resident of the Pacific Northwest.
