The death toll from the devastating fire aboard the MV Lady Mary Joy 3 has climbed to 76, Philippine Coast Guard officials confirmed early today. The vessel, which was carrying over 250 passengers and crew, erupted into flames late Wednesday night while traversing the Sulu Sea.

Rescue teams are still combing the charred wreckage, but officials say the likelihood of finding more survivors is fading. Families have gathered at the port of Jolo, clutching photographs of missing relatives, as authorities struggle to identify bodies recovered from the lower decks.

The fire broke out while most passengers were asleep. Survivors describe a scene of absolute chaos—thick smoke filling the cabins and people jumping into the dark, churning water to escape the heat.

“We didn’t hear an alarm,” said one survivor who was pulled from the water by a passing cargo ship. “We only felt the heat and heard the screams. By the time we reached the deck, the fire was already uncontrollable.”

The coast guard reports that the vessel was not overcrowded, yet the speed at which the flames spread suggests a catastrophic failure in safety protocols or a massive fuel leak. Investigators have begun questioning the captain and crew, focusing on whether fire suppression systems were functional or even activated.

This tragedy marks yet another dark chapter for the Philippines’ maritime industry, which relies heavily on aging ferry fleets to connect its thousands of islands. Lax oversight and poorly maintained vessels have historically turned routine voyages into disasters.

While the government has promised a full investigation into the cause, for the families waiting at the pier, the inquiry offers little solace. They are now dealing with the grim task of claiming their dead.

Recovery efforts are expected to continue through the weekend, though weather conditions in the Sulu Sea are beginning to deteriorate, further complicating the search for the final few missing passengers.
