A seven-year-old child died Tuesday when a roadside object detonated in the rural outskirts of Damascus. Local authorities confirmed the blast occurred in the Jaramana area, leaving the community reeling from the sudden violence.

The device—described by security officials as a remnant of war—detonated as the child walked near a residential perimeter. While the Syrian government often labels such incidents as the result of “terrorist remnants,” residents in the area say unexploded ordnance remains a persistent, unaddressed threat in neighborhoods that saw heavy fighting years ago.

This incident marks another grim statistic in Syria’s long-running conflict. Despite the front lines having stabilized in the capital’s suburbs, explosive hazards continue to claim lives. Families living in these areas face a daily gamble, navigating debris-strewn paths and abandoned lots that were never properly cleared after hostilities ceased.

“We hear about these things in the news, but you never think it’s going to be your street,” said a local resident who arrived at the scene shortly after the blast. He declined to be named for security reasons.

Hospital records in Damascus show that children remain the most frequent victims of such accidents, often mistaking discarded military hardware for scrap metal or toys. While the government has launched sporadic demining awareness campaigns, international aid groups argue the effort is insufficient. Funding for clearance operations has plummeted, leaving vast swathes of residential land contaminated.

The Syrian interior ministry has opened an investigation into the origin of the device. For the victim’s family, however, the inquiry offers little solace. They are now left to bury a child in a city where the war officially ended years ago, yet continues to kill.
