What to Eat for Younger-Looking Skin: Foods That Support Healthy Ageing

Healthy, glowing skin is not only influenced by skincare products but also by the foods people eat every day. A balanced diet rich in colourful fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and fermented foods may help maintain skin health, support collagen production and reduce some visible signs of ageing.

As people grow older, the body gradually produces less collagen, a protein that helps keep the skin firm and elastic. Sun exposure, air pollution and other environmental factors can also damage skin cells and contribute to wrinkles, dryness and changes in skin texture.
Colourful Fruits and Vegetables May Protect Skin
Carrots, tomatoes, peppers, mangoes and citrus fruits contain vitamins and antioxidants that support healthy skin. Carrots and tomatoes are rich in carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene, which help protect cells against damage. The body can convert beta-carotene into vitamin A, which is important for normal skin-cell growth.

Mangoes and citrus fruits also provide vitamin C, a nutrient the body needs to produce collagen. Some research suggests that regular mango consumption may improve the appearance of wrinkles, although further studies are needed to confirm the findings. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables consistently is more beneficial than relying on a single food.
Healthy Fats Help Maintain Skin Moisture
Nuts, seeds and certain vegetable oils provide vitamin E and healthy fats that support the skin’s protective barrier. Almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts and seeds can be included in everyday meals to help supply these nutrients.

Oily fish, including sardines, salmon and mackerel, provide omega-3 fatty acids, which may help support normal skin function and regulate inflammation. Including suitable sources of healthy fats in a balanced diet can help maintain the skin’s natural moisture barrier.
Gut Health May Also Influence Skin
The relationship between gut health and skin is an emerging area of research. A varied diet containing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, lentils, herbs and spices supports beneficial gut microbes. These microbes produce compounds that may help regulate inflammation and support the body’s immune system.

Fermented foods such as yoghurt, kimchi and sauerkraut can also support gut microbial diversity. However, the effects on skin differ between individuals, and more research is needed to understand how changes in gut bacteria influence specific skin conditions.
Healthy Habits Matter Alongside Nutrition
Although nutritious foods can support skin health, no single food can stop the ageing process or remove wrinkles completely. Experts recommend combining a balanced diet with adequate sleep, regular physical activity, sufficient hydration and protection from excessive sun exposure.

Using broad-spectrum sunscreen, avoiding smoking and maintaining a consistent skincare routine can also help reduce premature skin ageing.

Ultimately, eating a varied diet rich in plant-based foods, healthy fats and fermented products may help keep skin healthier over time. Consistency, rather than quick fixes or expensive supplements, is an important part of supporting healthy skin as the body ages.
