Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common infection, and certain high-risk types can cause changes in cervical cells that may eventually lead to cervical cancer. Regular HPV screening can help detect these infections early and reduce the risk of cervical cancer.

At-home HPV testing is becoming a more convenient option for some people. Instead of visiting a clinic for sample collection, eligible users can collect a vaginal sample themselves and send it to a laboratory for testing. However, an at-home HPV test is not the same as a Pap smear, and a positive result may require follow-up testing with a healthcare professional.

1. Teal Health HPV Self-Collection Test

The Teal Health option is an FDA-approved at-home HPV self-collection method in the United States. It uses the Teal Wand to collect a vaginal sample, which is then sent to a laboratory for testing.

The process is designed to provide privacy and convenience while allowing eligible users to collect their own samples at home. Results and follow-up guidance are provided through the company’s healthcare platform.

2. Onclarity HPV Self-Collection

The BD Onclarity HPV system is another newer option associated with HPV self-collection. In 2026, the FDA cleared an Onclarity self-collection kit for home use, expanding the options available for people who prefer collecting their own samples.

The test looks for high-risk HPV types associated with cervical cancer. Availability and ordering requirements can vary, so users should check current local guidance before purchasing or using a kit.

3. Roche cobas HPV Test

The Roche cobas HPV test is an established high-risk HPV test. Self-collection with cobas has been approved in certain settings, although the exact collection method and whether it can be performed at home depend on the approved device and location.

The test identifies high-risk HPV types, including HPV 16 and HPV 18, which are among the types most strongly associated with cervical cancer.

4. Other Laboratory-Based HPV Self-Collection Options

Some healthcare systems and testing services offer HPV self-collection using validated swabs or collection devices. In England, for example, the NHS began rolling out free home HPV self-testing kits in August 2026 for eligible women who have not attended previous cervical screening invitations. Samples are mailed to the NHS for testing.

The availability of these services differs significantly by country, so a person should check with their national screening programme or healthcare provider to find out which tests are officially available.

How Do At-Home HPV Tests Work?

Most self-collection methods involve using a swab or similar device to collect a sample from inside the vagina. The sample is then placed in the supplied container and returned to a laboratory.

The laboratory checks the sample for high-risk types of HPV. If the result is negative, the person may simply continue with screening according to the recommended schedule. If HPV is detected, additional testing may be recommended to determine whether cervical cell changes are present.

Are At-Home HPV Tests Accurate?

Research suggests that properly performed HPV self-collection can provide results comparable to clinician-collected samples when an approved combination of collection device and HPV assay is used. Recent guidance recommends using only validated and approved combinations.

However, users should carefully follow the collection instructions. A positive HPV result does not automatically mean that a person has cervical cancer.

Who Should Consider At-Home HPV Testing?

At-home self-collection may be particularly useful for eligible people who experience barriers to traditional screening, such as discomfort with pelvic examinations, lack of time or difficulty accessing healthcare.

However, self-collection is generally intended for people at average risk who do not have concerning symptoms. People with symptoms such as unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge, a history of cervical cancer or certain other risk factors may need clinician-based evaluation instead.

What Happens After a Positive Result?

A positive high-risk HPV result does not mean that cancer is present. HPV infections are common, and many clear naturally.

Depending on the HPV type and a person’s screening history, follow-up may include a clinician-collected cervical sample, Pap testing or colposcopy. Anyone receiving a positive result should follow the recommended medical guidance rather than ignoring the result.

Bottom Line

At-home HPV self-collection is making cervical cancer screening more convenient and accessible for eligible people. Options such as Teal Health and newer Onclarity-based testing are expanding access, while other HPV assays may be available through healthcare settings.

The most important point is to choose an approved and validated test, follow the instructions carefully and complete any recommended follow-up after the result. At-home testing can be an additional screening option, but it does not replace medical evaluation when symptoms or higher-risk factors are present.
