A passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a roadside drain in Hafizabad early Tuesday, leaving at least five people dead and injuring 27 others.
The bus was traveling from Faisalabad to Mandi Bahauddin when the driver lost control near the Pindi Bhattian area. Rescue teams reached the site within minutes, pulling bodies and survivors from the wreckage submerged in the murky water.
Hospital officials confirmed the death toll, noting that several of the 27 injured remain in critical condition. They were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Hafizabad, where surgeons are working to stabilize those with severe trauma.
Initial police reports point to excessive speed as the primary cause. Witnesses described the bus swerving violently before smashing through a barrier and dropping into the drain. Local authorities have launched an investigation, though the driver’s current status remains unclear—he is among those being treated for injuries.
Road accidents of this nature are a recurring tragedy on this stretch of highway. Poor visibility, aging vehicles, and a persistent disregard for speed limits continue to claim lives, leaving families across the region to deal with the sudden, preventable loss of their loved ones.
As the recovery operation concludes, the focus shifts to the survivors. For the families gathered at the hospital, the wait for news on those in the operating theater has only just begun.
