Pakistan has ranked ahead of India in the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) 2025, highlighting the country’s performance in international English-language assessments. According to the report, Pakistan secured 67th position among 123 countries and regions, while India ranked 74th. Pakistan recorded an overall score of 493 points, compared with India’s 484, placing Pakistan seven positions ahead of its neighbouring country in the global ranking.
The report also highlights Pakistan’s performance across four major English-language skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening. Pakistan scored 517 points in speaking, compared with India’s 500, showing a 17-point difference. In reading, Pakistan secured 512 points against India’s 494, while its writing score reached 515 compared with India’s 504. Pakistan also recorded 470 points in listening, ahead of India’s 457.
According to the index, Pakistan’s overall score is above the global average of 488, while India’s score remains below it. However, both countries are placed in the “Low Proficiency” category, indicating that there is still considerable room for improvement in English-language education. The results have drawn attention to the importance of communication skills for students, graduates and professionals seeking opportunities in international markets.
The EF English Proficiency Index 2025 is based on test results from approximately 2.2 million adults who took the EF Standard English Test during 2024. The assessment included speaking and writing alongside reading and listening, although these additional sections were optional. Since participation was voluntary and online, the findings represent test participants rather than a randomly selected sample of the entire population. Nevertheless, the results highlight Pakistan’s performance in the latest international comparison and underline the importance of strengthening English-language education across the country.
