The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Election Commission has officially released the breakdown for the assembly’s reserved seats, concluding weeks of speculation over the legislature’s final composition. The notification confirms the allocation of five seats reserved for women and three for technocrats, effectively finalizing the house’s strength ahead of upcoming legislative sessions.

Under the notification, the ruling party—led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)—has secured the majority of these seats, a move that reinforces its grip on the assembly. The opposition, primarily the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has challenged the distribution formula, claiming it deviates from established proportional representation norms.

The seats were allocated based on the number of general seats each party won in the recent general elections. While the government maintains the process followed the AJK Interim Constitution Act, critics argue the timing and the specific methodology used to calculate the quotas favor the incumbent administration.

“The commission has acted strictly within the legal framework,” a spokesperson for the Election Commission told reporters Tuesday. He dismissed claims of political bias, noting that the formula used for the 2024 allocation mirrors the one applied in previous cycles.

The opposition isn’t buying that explanation. Senior leaders from both the PPP and PML-N have already begun consulting with legal counsel, signaling that the matter is likely headed for the High Court. They argue that the seat distribution fails to reflect the actual vote share across the region’s diverse constituencies.

For the average citizen in Muzaffarabad or Mirpur, the political maneuvering over these eight seats is more than just a numbers game. It determines which bills pass, how development funds are partitioned, and ultimately, how much influence the opposition has in steering policy. With the assembly now fully seated, the government faces the immediate pressure of passing a budget in an environment where the margin for error is razor-thin.

The legislative session scheduled for next week will serve as the first true test of the government’s stability, as the opposition plans to use the floor to contest the validity of these appointments. Until the court intervenes, however, the current distribution stands—locking in the legislative map for the foreseeable future.
