SHAHDADKOT — A police constable was shot dead by unidentified armed men in the Kambar Shahdadkot district on Tuesday, marking another violent incident in a region struggling with frequent security challenges.
The officer, identified as Constable Ghulam Mustafa, was patrolling on a motorcycle when attackers intercepted him near the main city area. Witnesses reported that the gunmen opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene, leaving the constable to succumb to his injuries on the spot.
Local police arrived shortly after the shooting, cordoning off the area to collect forensic evidence. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kambar Shahdadkot stated that a heavy contingent of police has been deployed to track the suspects. “We are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby businesses and questioning potential witnesses to identify the culprits,” he said.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. While police have not ruled out personal enmity, the nature of the ambush suggests a targeted hit. No militant group or criminal outfit has claimed responsibility for the killing as of Tuesday evening.
This attack follows a series of recent incidents in the Sindh province, where law enforcement officials have increasingly become targets of street crime and organized criminal gangs. The local police union has expressed deep frustration, demanding better protection for officers operating in high-risk zones.
“We are out here every day putting our lives on the line with minimal support,” one fellow officer said at the local station, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “When a policeman is killed in the middle of the city in broad daylight, it sends a message that no one is safe.”
The body was shifted to a local hospital for a post-mortem examination. As the investigation enters its first 24 hours, the police department faces mounting pressure from local residents to restore order and bring the perpetrators to justice before the trail goes cold.
