KARACHI — Armed men intercepted a gold merchant in the city’s busy commercial district Tuesday, making off with 10 tolas of gold in a daylight robbery that has once again rattled the local business community.

The victim was traveling near the main market when two men on a motorcycle pulled alongside his vehicle. They brandished handguns and forced him to pull over, according to initial police reports. Within seconds, the assailants seized the gold—valued at millions of rupees—and fled into the dense afternoon traffic.

The robbery follows a string of similar incidents across Karachi, where gold traders have increasingly become targets for organized street gangs.

“They knew exactly what they were looking for,” said a local trader who arrived shortly after the incident. “This wasn’t a random snatch-and-grab. They were waiting, and they were prepared to use force.”

Police arrived at the scene roughly 20 minutes after the alarm was raised. Investigators are currently scrubbing CCTV footage from nearby storefronts to identify the suspects, though they face a significant challenge due to the lack of clear license plates on the getaway motorcycle.

For the city’s jewellery sector, the incident is more than a financial loss. It’s a recurring security nightmare. Traders are now questioning the effectiveness of police patrols in areas where high-value goods are transported daily.

“We’ve asked for more security presence in the market zones, but promises don’t stop bullets,” one merchant remarked while closing his shop early in protest.

While the investigation remains in its early stages, the police have yet to make any arrests. For now, the traders of Karachi are left to navigate the streets with the constant, grinding reality that their livelihood is increasingly at the mercy of armed gangs.
