The bird dog is a simple body-weight exercise that can help strengthen the core, lower back and muscles around the spine while improving balance and stability. Harvard Health describes it as an “opposite arm and leg lift,” making it useful for developing core control without requiring gym equipment.

How to Do the Bird Dog

  1. Start on your hands and knees, keeping your hands directly beneath your shoulders and knees beneath your hips.
  2. Tighten your abdominal muscles and keep your back and neck in a neutral position.
  3. Slowly extend your left leg backward while reaching your right arm forward.
  4. Keep your raised arm and leg roughly parallel to the floor and avoid rotating or lifting your hips.
  5. Hold the position for about 10 seconds, then slowly return to the starting position.
  6. Repeat with the opposite arm and leg. Harvard suggests starting with about five repetitions on each side.

Why Is It Good for the Core?

The bird dog works several muscles involved in trunk stability and posture, including the abdominal and lower-back muscles. A stronger, more stable core can support everyday movements and help maintain stability around the spine.

Tips for Doing It Safely

The key is control rather than speed. Keep your hips level, avoid arching your lower back, and move your arm and leg slowly. If balancing both limbs at once is difficult, begin by lifting only one arm or one leg at a time.

People with existing pain, injuries or physical limitations should seek guidance from a doctor or physical therapist before adding the exercise to their routine.

With consistent practice and proper form, the bird dog can be an effective addition to a home workout routine for improving core strength, stability and body control.
