Caffeine can have a complicated relationship with headaches. For some people, a moderate and consistent amount of caffeine may help prevent or reduce headache pain, while for others, caffeine can trigger headaches or make them more frequent. Harvard Health notes that for most adults, moderation means roughly one to two cups of coffee a day.

How Can Caffeine Help Headaches?

Caffeine can affect blood vessels and brain activity, which may help reduce headache symptoms. It is also included in some headache medicines because it can enhance the pain-relieving effects of certain medications.

For someone who regularly consumes caffeine, having a usual amount may sometimes help when a headache begins. Harvard Health also lists drinking a caffeinated beverage such as coffee among possible nondrug measures for headache relief.

When Can Caffeine Cause Headaches?

The problem can arise when caffeine intake becomes too high or inconsistent. People who are prone to migraines may find that caffeine triggers an attack, particularly at higher levels of consumption. Research has found that three or more caffeinated drinks in a day may trigger migraines in some susceptible people.

Suddenly stopping caffeine after regular use can also cause a withdrawal headache. This is one reason why people who want to reduce their caffeine intake are generally better off cutting back gradually rather than quitting abruptly.

So, Should You Drink Coffee for a Headache?

There is no single answer for everyone. If moderate caffeine consistently helps your headaches, there may be little reason to eliminate it. But if you notice that headaches appear after consuming more caffeine—or when you skip your usual coffee—it may be contributing to the problem.

Keeping track of when you consume caffeine and when headaches occur can help identify your personal pattern. People who frequently experience severe or recurring headaches should discuss them with a healthcare professional rather than relying on caffeine alone.
