The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has set a tentative timeline for the long-delayed local government elections in the Poonch division. If the current plan holds, voters in the region will head to the polls between August 20 and 21.

The announcement comes after months of legal and administrative gridlock that left the division’s local governance in a state of suspended animation. While the CEC’s office is pushing for this two-day window, the final schedule remains subject to the immediate deployment of security personnel and the formal notification of district-level returning officers.

For the residents of Poonch, the delay hasn’t just been a bureaucratic hurdle—it’s meant a total absence of local representatives tasked with addressing municipal grievances. Sanitation, infrastructure, and local development funds have been effectively frozen since the previous electoral cycle lapsed, leaving district administrations to manage without elected oversight.

The Election Commission is now coordinating with provincial authorities to ensure the polling process remains insulated from the ongoing political friction in the region. Political observers note that the August window is tight; any further disruption, whether from weather-related logistical challenges or eleventh-hour security concerns, could force another postponement.

Opposition leaders in the region have expressed skepticism, citing previous missed deadlines as evidence of government reluctance to transfer power to the grassroots level. They argue that the CEC must guarantee transparency, warning that any perception of pre-poll rigging could spark protests across the division.

Election officials maintain that the timeline is fixed, with the commission expected to release the official code of conduct by the end of the week. Whether the administration can mobilize the thousands of polling staff required in such a short window will be the true test of their resolve.

Until those ballot boxes are opened and the results are tallied, the people of Poonch remain in a familiar holding pattern—waiting for a democratic process that has been promised more than once.
