Electricity consumers eligible for the 200-unit lifeline subsidy are facing an immediate deadline: register via the mandatory QR code system or lose the benefit entirely.

The directive comes as power distribution companies (DISCOs) tighten verification protocols to weed out ineligible households. While the subsidy was designed to protect low-income families from rising energy costs, authorities say the current manual monitoring process is prone to errors and leakages.

Under the new system, consumers must scan a designated QR code provided on their monthly bills or via official utility portals to verify their household status. Failure to link the meter to the digital database will trigger an automatic disqualification from the subsidy bracket starting next billing cycle.

“The goal is simple: ensure the money actually reaches the people who need it,” a senior official at the Power Division said. “We’ve seen too many instances where high-consumption households were gaming the system. This digital audit stops that.”

The shift is causing friction among consumers, particularly in areas with limited internet access. Many residents report confusion over the registration process, with local customer service centers reporting long queues of individuals seeking manual assistance to bypass the digital requirement.

Critics argue the move ignores the “digital divide.” For a household struggling to pay for basic electricity, navigating a QR-based verification system—which requires both a smartphone and stable connectivity—is a significant barrier to entry.

For those who rely on the lifeline tariff, the stakes are high. Moving from the subsidized rate to the standard commercial slab could result in a 30% to 50% increase in monthly bills.

Utility companies maintain that the transition is non-negotiable. They have advised consumers to visit their nearest customer facilitation centers if they cannot complete the registration online.

As the deadline approaches, the burden of proof has shifted entirely to the consumer. If your meter isn’t verified in the system by the end of the current billing period, the discount disappears—regardless of your actual consumption.
