ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Customs has issued a warning regarding the alleged misuse of rice export subsidy schemes, expressing concern that certain exporters may be exploiting government incentives through inaccurate declarations and questionable claims.
According to customs officials, preliminary reviews have identified irregularities in some subsidy applications, prompting authorities to strengthen oversight mechanisms. The department fears that abuse of the subsidy program could result in substantial financial losses to the national exchequer and undermine efforts aimed at supporting genuine exporters.
Officials stated that the government introduced subsidy incentives to boost rice exports, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and improve the competitiveness of Pakistani rice in international markets. However, any misuse of these incentives could negatively affect the credibility of the program and deprive legitimate businesses of the benefits intended for them.
To address the issue, Customs has initiated stricter verification procedures, including enhanced scrutiny of export documentation, shipment records, and subsidy claims. Authorities have also warned that individuals or companies found involved in fraudulent practices may face legal action, penalties, and possible disqualification from future incentive schemes.
The department reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and fair distribution of government support while safeguarding public funds from misuse.
